Under her leadership,
local councils for women were developed, rape crisis programs were
implemented, and the number of shelters for domestic violence victims
increased significantly. Mrs. Nelson worked closely with the Small
Business Centers ad Sex Equity programs at the community colleges in her
region.
She served on Boards
for United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Consumer Credit Counseling, Costal
Women's Forum, Human Services Council and served as Chair, Secretary ,
and member of the Craven County Board of Elections over a period of 16
years.
Mrs. Nelson was
nominated for the Women of Distinction Award and received the Order of
the Long Leaf Pine Award from the State.
Mrs. Nelson, who passed
away in the mid-1990s, was a native of North Carolina. She
attended Mars Hill College and East Carolina University. |
