YOUNG JUVENILE LEADER Award

Ms. Claudette Burroughs White

Claudette Burroughs-White a native of Greensboro, received her BA Degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (formerly Woman’s College). She was one of the first African Americans to integrate the University. Further course study at UNC-Chapel Hill in Social Work and Administration.

She spent 34 years as a teacher, counselor and probation officer with the North Carolina Justice System. She supervised the 18^th Judicial District Services Division for 26 years. She was appointed to the Greensboro City Council May 2, 1994 and has been re-elected ever since.

Her numerous professional and community involvements include serving the community on almost every board and commission having to do with children and youth. Appointed by the Governor of North Carolina to Chair Guilford County’s 1^st White House Conference on Children and Youth. She also convened Guilford County’s first committee and conference on Child Abuse. Co-founder of the WRAP Network (Working to Reduce Adolescent Problems) and served as Coordinator of the North Central North Carolina Delinquency Prevention Committee, which was the forerunner for the N.C. Advocates for Young Female Offenders. Founder and editor for “Against the Wall,” a newspaper addressing the special needs of females in the system.

Her notable professional involvements are too numerous to mention, therefore we will only mention a few. She currently serves on the UNC-G University Planning Council, the National Conference of Community and Justice, the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Advisory Board, Preservation Greensboro Inc. and A Healthy Start (a program for young girls). She serves on the grants committee for the Greensboro Community Foundation. Chaired the 30^th and 40^th Anniversary of the February 1, 1960 “Sit In”. She was appointed in 1997 to the N.C. Governor’s Crime Commission and re-appointed through 2003; and chairs the Disproportionate Minority Confinement committee.

Creating trust and inclusiveness between citizens and government, strengthening neighborhoods and improving basic services have been Mrs. Burroughs-White’s priorities as a councilwoman.
