CULTURAL AMBASSADOR Award

Dr. Alma S. Adams

 

Dr. Adams is currently a Professor and Chairperson of the Visual Arts & Humane Studies at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC.

She also serves as a Representative in the North Carolina General Assembly.  Dr. Adams has served four terms as Representative from the 26th House District; from her appointment in 1994, by then Governor James B. Hunt, to her re-election in November 2000. 

Dr. Adams’ service to North Carolina citizens has been distinguished through her unwavering efforts to improve the quality of life for women, children and families.  She has sponsored legislation to strengthen Domestic Violence laws, worked to improve adolescent pregnancy programs and promoted legislation for quality affordable health care for seniors and children.

Her desire to improve support for workers who needed to be “retrained” prompted her pioneering “Displaced Homemaker’s” legislation, which generates more than $700,000 each year for statewide programs. 

Dr. Adams is a member of the Guilford Democratic Women, NC Equity, the Greensboro NAACP and is a founding member of the American Legacy Foundation Board.  Her civic contributions also include co-chair of Welfare Reform and chair of the NC Joint Women’s Legislative Caucus.

A native of High Point, NC, Dr. Adams earned her BS and MS Degrees in Art Education/ Education at NC A&T State University and her Ph.D. in Art Education/Multiculturalism at The Ohio State University.
